Gorilla jumped on my back - and was he heavy?
9/12/04
This morning's run consisted of a 2km interval, followed by a 1km interval, followed by a 500m interval, another 2km interval and another 500m interval to finish. There's a 90 second recovery after the 2km and 1km intervals and a minute after the 500m interval.
Started off strongly and feeling good. Ran the 2km in 7:42. Followed up with the 1km in 3:44 and then the 500m in 1:43. The 500m effort took a fair bit out of me and then only getting 1 minute recovery, the next 2km was a very tough run. Could not get the legs to turn over quickly enough and it literally felt as though I was twice as heavy. Hence my reference to the gorilla jumping on my back. The harder I tried, the more form I lost and then just blew up. Finished in 8:15 which was very disappointing. After the next 90 second recovery, just wanted to finish on a positive note. Ran as hard as I could, concentrating on holding form for a 2minute 500m effort. Was absolutely knackered at the end and jogged very slowly home with my tail between my legs.
Just when you think you're starting to get the hang of this speedwork, it bites you on the bum. I guess it's time to take everything into perspective. Running that first 500m at just under 3:30 min/km pace was probably beyond my present capabilities but gees it felt good. Another good thing is apart from my pride being dented, body feels great and there's no hint of any injuries. (touch wood)
I just have to be patient and realise that things will happen over time. Just be consistent in your training and the results will come.
Looking forward to easing off the pedal over the next couple of days and taking it easy. Am hoping to get out for a swim at lunchtime.
