Saturday Night Twilight and Sunday Morning Tourist Trot

11/12/04

Went out with Belinda for our usual Saturday night loosener of 7.5km. Went out a bit later this time as had to wait for threatening storm to pass. Was a pleasant comfortable run and a good warmup for 20km planned for tomorrow morning.

Ventured out with Belinda this morning for the 20km version of the Striders STaR Tourist Trot as we could not make the official STaR at Middle Head today due to family commitments. For those who don't know this run, we started at the Lang and Robertson Rd entrance to Centennial Park, followed the main walking path anti-clockwise until the Kiosk/Restaurant, turned off up the hill towards Oxford St, turned right just before the gate at Oxford St and Lang Rd and followed that path around until we exited at the Oxford St gate then headed down Ocean St through Woollahra and down to Edgecliff. We then turned left into New South Head Rd and up the hill through the Kings Cross gateway, being heckled by all the drunks on their way home. Then it was down hill through William St passing all sorts of people in various states of disrepair. Then we turned right at Boomerang Crescent and turned right past St Mary's Cathedral through St Andrews Square, down King St, right into George St followed by a right turn at Circular Quay. Then the run gets really picturesque as you run around the Opera House and then around Farm Cove and Mrs Macquaries Chair past Boy Charlton Swimming Pool. We then ran down the stairs past the electricity substation before turning and running around Woolloomoolloo Bay past Garden Island before climbing up the hill to run through the main drag of Kings Cross. We then ran past a group of cyclists having some breakfast at one of the street cafes in Darlinghurst, past St Vincents Hospital before turning left at Oxford St, right up the hill just before Victoria Barracks and then along Driver Avenue past Aussie Stadium, the SCG and Fox Studios before finding our way back to Centennial Park for a run that is measured as 20km by the Striders. For those of you who know Sydney, I think you'll agree with the Striders naming this run the Tourist Trot as you run through and past several icons of Sydney.

Covered this run in just a bit over 2 hours, which was a really solid run for Belinda. This is helping her gain confidence as she builds up to her debut marathon at Canberra. Although, she is starting to realise that to run a Marathon, that she will have to be running for twice that time. It is all starting to become that much clearer to her but she is enjoying building towards that challenge and I am enjoying sharing this with her.

Will venture down to Bronte Beach for my Monday morning swim and then get back into a lighter week of training this week as I prepare for a fast 10km run at SMC next Sunday.
