Sub 42 10km - I did it

16/1/05

Lined up for the 10km with Mr G, Spud and Superflake. All with different goals, Superflake was trying very hard to break 40 minute barrier, Mr G said he would try and stick with me with the hope of running sub 42 and Spud backing up after his epic Bogong to Mt Hotham Ultra last week just wanting to see if his legs still work. Got off to a slower start than usual with the aim of looking for more consistent pacing over the entire journey. Went through the first km in 4:09 which was target pace with Mr G right on my shoulder. As the second km had 2 slight downhills in it, upped the pace and was surprised to see the split time for the km under 4 minutes. Passed a few runners in this km and was feeling great. Between 2km and 3km there is quite a long climb up a small hill that just seems to keep going and going. I started to pull away from Mr G on this climb and was happy to see 12:15 on the watch at 3km. I then set my sights on 2 runners just up ahead of me which I just tucked in behind and sat on for a while until 1 started to feel it on yet another climb and I went past him and decided to tag behind the other guy for a while longer as he looked like a SMC veteran who had run plenty of these races. I liked the feel of this as I let myself just get into his rhythm and I could switch off mentally for a while. Was happy to reach halfway in 20:45 which gave me 15 seconds in the bank which I knew I would need on the return as there are still a couple of hills on the way back that I struggled on last month. I was still on pace, running the 6th km in 4:07 but knew there was that nasty climb from 6-7km. This wasn't a good km for me again and my pace had dropped to 4:20 for this km and I knew I had to pull my finger out if I wanted to get under 42. I got the advantage I was looking for as I knew the next km was downhill on the way back. Pulled the pace back to 4:06 for this km and was again back on track. Then the second last km which was really easy on the way out was a lot harder on the way back. The guy who I had passed between 4 and 5km went past me easily and went after the guy who I was trying to hang onto. As they upped the pace and pulled away from me, I was on my own and really struggling and when I saw 4:26 for that km, I knew I had fallen off the pace big time. I then just decided to treat the last km as I would a last interval and just grit the teeth and leave nothing in the tank. This worked for me as I covered the last km in just under 4 minutes to finish in 41:55. Finally, after several runs in the 42s, I had broken that 42 minute barrier for the first time since 1990.

When I heard the finish judge shout the time to the recorder, I was just so relieved. I would have hated to bust a gut like that in the last km and get my HR up to 176 for the first time to just miss out again. It was great to chat with so many Cool Runners after the run as well. It really is like having an extended family.Too many names to mention but I appreciate all your support and friendship.

Well done, Horrie! That was worth "busting your guts" for! LL

Horrie!! You beauty. What a run! You describe it so well too. I can imagine the whole thing and I know the experience. You must be stoked. Well done. It would have been great to see you cross the line, especially after pulling that last K out of the bag. Your going like a Steam Train. You should have a pretty good head of steam built up by Canberra.
Eddie.

Horrie congratulations. That is an excellent effort and you should be very proud of yourself.

I am hoping to get down to 45mins sometime this year so I might have to start getting some tips from you!!

Well done Horrie!

Now for that 41 minute barrier and then 40 minutes!!

Lane Cove should be a great run.

Thanks everybody for your support. The support I am getting from the CR community is just great. You've just got to bottle it! Clairie, looking at how quickly you did that 8km run, I'd say you've got that 45 minute 10km in you. Can't wait to see you smash it in Canberra. Dave, small steps mate, small steps. If I can keep knocking a bit of time off, eventually it will get below 41 and hopefully, eventually 40. I am realising that in this wonderful sport, you just have to be consistent in your training and do your best to remain injury free. It is working for me at the moment and hopefully it will continue. You are right, I am already looking forward to Lane Cove as it is my favourite 10km course.

Horrie,
Last but not least. Excellent run on Sunday in that heavy air. You pushed hard all race and finally got past the 42mins. Keep it going I am sure you can get faster and help you get close to the 3:15 marathon.

Horrie!

I don't know how it took me so long to get to this, but congratulations on the huge run, and it was great to catch up with you again. See you next time!

Cheers,
Ben
