The Equaliser - 14km Cross Country Race

13/2/05

Great to be out and about this morning amongst a large contingent of the Sydney CR community.

Thanks to everybody for their warm wishes and support. You guys are great.

Started off at the back of the pack so I could let the runners I am normally running with disappear so I wouldn't be tempted to chase. As it was, started off quicker than I wanted to and was passing runners on the downhill. However, a quick check of the HR told me I was pushing it harder than what I planned to so I backed off. But when the uphills started after the creek crossing, HR was again going up too quickly so decided to walk these bits to keep it down. Met up with Aunty Karin just before the drink station, who was also taking it easy after her 40km expedition out to parts of 6 Foot Track yesterday. This woman is a machine! We then ran together for the next half hour having a nice chat and I soon forgot my nerves and didn't check the HR monitor during this time. Then when we reached the last uphill section, Karin decided to ease back a bit and I just started picking off tiring runners one by one and was having a ball. Then I decided to check my HR again, realised that it had climbed into the 170s so I decided to walk the steep sections after that. Papa Luigi, who was having a sterling run would go past me when I was walking then I would go past him when I started running again. I hope I wasn't annoying him too much. Once over that last steep hill, I decided to just run it out to the finish and not worry about HR as there wasn't that long to go. Finished in 82:46 by my watch and was feeling great when I finished. Probably ran it a bit too easy but would rather be taking it easier than pushing it too hard at this stage.

Well done Horrie. It sounds like you had a good time this morning. You seem to have a good mix betwwen running according to how you were feeling and taking note of the HR. It was great that you were out there and at the same time not doing anything to cause Belinda to become over-anxious.
I am sure you will take on Canberra feeling very relaxed and thoroughly enjoy it.

Excellent run today Horrie. Glad to see you took it easy and just enjoyed the run without flogging yourself. Gotta keep the wife happy and I am sure Belinda would be happy you came home relaxed after the race.

Nice to know that you're out & about again, Horrie, & taking your time getting fully back into the swing of things; will see my GP this afternoon as the right knee was really bad after yesterday's longer than long run; might need an x-ray; all the best to you & hugs for Belinda...from Chickybabe!
