Given the All Clear so time to up the ante
21/2/05
Visited a Sports Physician today just as a follow up that was recommended by the cardio specialist when I was discharged from hospital. After scratching his head and wondering why I was there, we had a chat about my collapse and the events leading up to it. He was sure it was caused by dehydration as the bout I suffered on the Sunday before was a warning that my fluid levels were low and I never replenished them enough before racing the following Saturday. He said that it was not a good sign that I woke up thirsty on the morning of the race and really should have made an effort to drink more. He said to take it as a lesson and that it is better to drink too much than too little. He also said that I was managing my recovery quite well and to just run as to how I feel. As for the raised levels of triponin found in my blood post race that is a marker of heart problems, he confirmed what Action and Mr G had said that the levels would have been caused by muscle breakdown and that most runners who ran in that race would have had increased levels of triponin. What a big relief it was to realise that there wasn't anything wrong with my heart. He made a joke about my resting HR being so slow and how it would have sent the hospital staff into a bit of a spin, saying they aren't used to treating such fit people in hospital. I already knew that as Belinda had relayed a similar story about a patient she was nursing at one time.

So to find something to do to push a bit harder again. Wasn't quite sure what to do as I felt like the kid in the lolly shop! After realising that the quads were still a little tight after 25km effort on Sunday, decided not to go straight back into intervals but do my normal 10.5km run but run it around 4:30 per km pace and see how it felt. Well some parts felt great, others not so great, eased up a bit going up the hill as I didn't want to push the HR up too high and finished it off very strongly with a 4 minute last km to finish in 47 minutes. Average HR was 156, which is what it has been doing this run in warmer weather on previous occasions.
I will continue to take it easier with reduced speed sessions until the confidence picks up again. And besides that I have a 6 hour metrogaine to do with O Runner on Sunday so no need for speed at the moment.

Woo hoo. Go get em cowboy...
I love the kid in the lolly shop analogy. Running is like that when you come back from injury and realise you are all better now.

That's all good news, Horrie, but keep it 'easy'; how is Belinda's ankle injury? Is she fully recovered? LL
Belinda's ankle is improving slowly. She might try to do a light run tomorrow to see how it copes. She has managed to do some minor damage to the ligament on the inside of the ankle.
Good news Horrie. Keep it steady and don't try and get back to the level you were at before the STaR. Best to find a new level to train and race at for Canberra. Hope Belinda's ankle heals well.
Excellent news Horrie!
We'll have some fun on Sunday and give them a shake. A great relief to the sub-conscious I am sure.

Horrie, I admire your patience,if that was me I would be stupidly pushing myself again. Stick with the "easing" back into it mate.
Have fun at the Metrogaine.

Excellent news Horrie. Just a couple of good confidence boosters now and there'll be no stopping you.
Give my regards to Belinda... hope the ankle comes good soon.

Excellent news, Horrie. It's also great to see you upping the ante sensibly - and thereby inspiring me to do the same.
