Cool Running 5km Challenge
26/3/05
When I first woke up and heard the rain, I got up had a couple of slices of toast and a couple of glasses of water and just headed back to bed. Didn't really feel like running at all. Despite this, finally dragged myself out but when I got to the Bay, didn't want to get out of my footy jumper and trakky pants. It was just that sort of morning.
I decided to head off with the 20 minute group this morning. As when I finally got stripped for running that anything around 20 would be good. Headed off with Redback and O Runner leading us out. I tucked in behind with Mr Wildthing. With another guy (sorry don't know your name) and Mr G not far behind. We went through the first km in 3:45 and I wasn't feeling too bad. The second km seemed even better with the pace slowing slightly, covering that in 3:55. In the third km, O Runner and Redback started to pull away slightly but I wasn't worried as I had caught Bobby who started at 21 minutes and was keeping him company. I went through the third km in 3:58 but was starting to feel it here. I soon noticed that O Runner and Redback had started to open quite a gap on me and I was having trouble shaking Bobby. I finally shook him somewhere around the 4km mark. I didn't get this split as I always seem to miss it. I know the general vicinity it is at, but don't know the exact point. I spent the last km rounding up runners who had started off earlier and this kept me focussed and full of running to finish in 19:43. When I finished, I had a quick look at the watch and thought it said 19:48. So after telling everybody I did 19:48, I was very happy driving home to realise it was 19:43. It was the same feeling you get when you find a $5 note in your jeans after they have been washed. A small bonus!
Even though it was 13 seconds outside my PB and well behind O Runner and Redback who had jets in their shoes this morning, I was very happy to go sub 20 considering I didn't even feel like running before the race and that it was only 2 weeks after doing 6 Foot Track and only recently starting speedwork again. I feel as though I am in good shape for Canberra.
