Clovelly Canter STaR
29/5/05
Belinda was running her first STaR in 4 months and I was hosting the 7am shorter (16km) version. So I opted to start with Belinda and the MTG at 6am, run for 30 minutes and head back to the start to fulfill my 7am hosting duties.
6am saw Striders take off from all directions and we were left behind. We had to increase the tempo to catch the group and this was a challenge for Belinda as they were running at a quicker tempo than she ran her Half Marathon in last week and this was only a 23km training run. We caught them about a km into the run and were able to tag onto the back. I was able to grab Jim Moody the MTG Co-ordinator's attention that Belinda was hoping to do the 23km version but would need some company after I left. Jim then slowed a fraction to keep Belinda company before I headed off back to the start for my 7am start. I managed to do around 7km in 35 minutes. When I got back, Blue Dog, Bernie G and Gronk were there ready to keep me company on the shorter version.
Groundhog day had arrived again as I was starting off on the first part of the run again, although this time I had different company. We were running through Centennial Park when Blue Dog went chasing off after a beagle who had got excited, joined us in our run and ran away from his owner. When I asked Bernie G if the dog was a distant cousin of Blue Dog, she replied that it may be his love child.
We then headed up through Charing Cross, down to Tamarama to the glorious sight of a huge swell of waves rolling in and the sun rising in the east. This was a truly great sight and you were just happy to be able to be healthy, running and able to take it all in. We then headed around to Bronte where I advised everybody that we had 2 choices, the 10km or 15km options. Everybody was happy to run 15km so off we went up the hill from Bronte through Waverley Cemetery, down to Clovelly, then around to Coogee before turning up towards Brook St and making our way back to finish in Queen's Park. The GPS measured the run at 16km and we finished in 1:37 for a lovely relaxing run on a gourgeous morning.
Stayed around at the end and chatted to a bunch of great people for a great way to end the morning.
