SMH Half Marathon

22/5/05

It was a perfect day for the event. How great is it to run around the City of Sydney on a day like today?

It was absolutely awesome seeing so many Cool Runners and Striders out there today. The runners running near me and Belinda would have been envious with all the support we were getting from everybody, especially the CR Cheer Squad led by The Owl, Jen Runs, Wildthing and gnscon.

Belinda and I had an awesome day. Considering that she couldn't even run 7 weeks ago after spending 7 weeks on the sideline, she was ecstatic to be running and finishing a Half Marathon. Although she probably wouldn't agree with that comment whilst coming up the Argyle Cut the second time around as well as running that last 1.1km.

We started with Tiger Angel, sfGnome, Gronk and Omni. It wasn't long before Tiger Angel and sfGnome were out of sight. We went through the first 5km in 29 minutes, which was a bit quicker than what we had planned to do. We ran for a while with Gronk, while Omni would make brief appearances before taking off again. They surged ahead up the hill around the Art Gallery and Gronk was not to be seen again. We caught up with Omni just before 15km and I asked him if it was hurting yet as he had told me on the first lap that it wasn't hurting. He said he was and said that it was meant to. We went through the 15km mark in around 89:30 after leaving Omni behind. Going up the hill towards the Art Gallery the second time around was tough going for Belinda and we started to slow here, even though we were overtaking a few who were doing it tougher. After reaching Macquarie St, we tried to step the pace up a bit but Belinda was having trouble drinking at this stage. However, when we got to the downhill on Hunter St, Belinda was able to stride out and have a drink so was starting to feel better. The tall city buildings provided a bit of shade as well. We were holding our form well and ran past another wild cheer from the Cheer Squad before heading up the Argyle Cut the second time and this was quite a battle. We again managed to overtake a few here who were struggling here. Then on the downhill back to Hickson Rd, Belinda's 'good' ankle was starting to hurt. We then got to the start and I reminded her that it was only 1.1km to go. We then just did our best and tried to hang on the best we could until the finish to finish in 2:07 by our watch.

It was great running with Belinda and helping her on her comeback. I am so proud of her! Considering she was unable to run 7 weeks ago after spending 7 weeks on the sideline, to run and finish a Half Marathon was a fantastic effort.

We will now start to increase the mileage as we build up to the Sydney Marathon in 4 months time.

Thanks for the comments Horrie, and loved your race report - shame I missed you on the day, but at least I managed to hear about the great run yourself and Belinda did together.
