Striders 10km race at North Head

7/5/05

Headed out with Belinda for her first Striders 10km in 3 months. We let everybody go at the start and it just makes you realise that the pace is on at these events. Within a couple of minutes we found ourselves at the rear end of the field keeping 71 year old Frank Dearn company. We started to pull away from him around the 2km mark. We then managed to pick up a few more runners in the next couple of kms as they went out too fast and were slowing noticably. Belinda had settled into a nice rhythm and was keeping pace consistent at around 5:41 per km for the first 4km. However, her pace started to drop slightly as the run went on, going through the 5th km in 5:44 to reach the halfway point in 28:27 but we were on target to run sub 57. I missed the 6km marker but we reached the 7km marker averaging 5:47 per km for those 2 kms. Another 5:47 km for the 8th km and then her slowest km for the 9th in 5:52 before a blistering 5:29 last km to finish in 57:10, which was 5 seconds quicker than her last 10km race in February and only 45 seconds outside her PB. A fantastic run considering she is only 4 weeks back from injury. We got a great reception from all the Cool Runners out there today and Belinda really appreciated all the support she got and it definitely spurred her on. Thank you everyone. She is really looking forward to the SMH Half in 2 weeks with a lot of confidence.

Comments:
Well done Belinda. We all (with the possible exception of Colac) appreciate all too well the difficulty in coming back after illness or injury. A good result and well managed run. Looking good for the Half.
