Post Marathon Recovery

12/9/05

Headed down to Bronte Beach for an hour pool session to treat the legs. Belinda really felt the benefit of this and was not limping as much afterwards. The calf was very sore and knows it has been given a workout.

Belinda was dying to get out and have a run. After trying to convince her to have the day off, she got dressed in her gear, stretched and was ready to run. Only problem was that she didn't manage to convince the calf of this. After a few painful steps, she realised that she was being a bit too ambitious so went back in.

I then ventured out for a slow and steady 10.5km in just over 52:30. I certainly noticed the effects of the marathon and felt sluggish in most parts of the run. Glad I got out there anyway.

We decided that Belinda would not run while she still has pain in the calf. We also decided it was a good time to wear in the orthotics she got a couple of months ago. She had not tried to wear them in before because she did not want to disrupt her marathon training.

We went for a 4km walk with her wearing her orthotics and me wearing my Nike Frees. She could really feel the benefit of the orthotics and the calf did not cause her as much grief as she expected it to. It was about the 4th time I had walked in the Frees and this was the best they had felt. I will do a couple more walks in them before running in them.

There won't be much running for the next couple of days as I have picked up a nasty head cold and after reading about Vat Man's experience, I will not be risking it with the Melbourne Marathon only a bit over 3 weeks away.

Comments:
Belinda, that sore calf could be a blessing in disguise, stopping you from doing too much too soon. I remember post GC Pat warned me of the perils of feeling great immediately after a marathon.

Recover well!

Hey guys!! Enjoy the rest and recovery :) Take it easy on the calf B... It would be great if you do Canberra :)

Hi! Well done to both of you but especially Belinda in doing her first marathon. A great achievement! I think I briefly met you at the Orient Hotel Sunday afternoon - I showed up with Flash Duck. I've been trying to get out for a short run the last couple of days but convincing my body to do that is a different story - its just not playing the game! Maybe tomorrow....!
