CR 5km Challenge

31/12/05

Belinda decided to head out on a very humid morning for her 5km debut. As Bernie G had offered to pace her, I joined the Blue Dog 21 minute bus in an attempt to bring Johnny Dark in for a PB.

Belinda and Bernie G were joined by an effervescent Kit who playfully ran along with them like a young puppy having the time of her life. Having run the first km quite fast, Belinda questioned her wisdom of running with and trying to keep up with 2 girls a lot younger than her. Then she decided she didn't have time to think and she just had to grit her teeth and try to keep up with them. Bernie G informed her that she was on target to break 27 minutes with 1.5km to go, which pleased her. However, with that last winding km and Kit deciding to pull up stumps with around 200m to go, Belinda had trouble maintaining her rhythm and slowed slightly to finish in 27:06. She was happy with the run but a bit disappointed that she didn't go sub 27 but it was a great run in very tough humid and oppressive conditions. She was extremely grateful for the great pacing of Bernie G and the company of Kit. It made it a very memorable experience for the last day of the year.

I didn't feel like running fast this morning and busting a lung a week out from my target event, the Gosford 12 Hour next Saturday. But because of small numbers, I elected to run with the Blue Dog bus with the 21 minute group as Johnny Dark was willing to have a crack at his PB of 20:58. We were joined by a couple of others and went through the first km in 4:05. The second km was run at a similar pace and we went through that in 8:09. We started to slow slightly as we neared the 3km mark and I didn't get this split. JD started to fall behind a bit after 3km so we slowed with him and tried to encourage him to stick with us by maintaining his stride and rhythm. We went through 4km in 16:42 so we told JD that he had it in the bag and just had to hang on. Blue Dog and I slowed again and left a space in the middle and encouraged him to catch up to us and finish with us but he was spent at this point and finished a few seconds behind us but ahead of his old PB to finish in 20:56. It was a great effort in very tough conditions and well earnt.

After a quick chat, we cruised back to the start for a 5km warmdown to finish off a great morning's running.

Belinda,

Great run today. I am a little disappointed I failed to get you there in sub 27. But with the heat and humidity it was a great run and PB. Now you now the course and particularly the last km which combined with your speed work sub 27min is in the bag next month.

Hey great run this morning!!! B it is really exciting to watch your improvements... you can pace us soon :-) I can guarantee you will easily crack 27 when it is not 93% humidity and we now actually know where the finish line is ;-) Sorry about that!!

It is soo nice to see such a supportive couple! I hoep Ray and I follow your path!

Happy new year to you both and all your family! Heres to a year of sub 55 and 6ft debuts ( and of course Horries continued great running)
