Beyond the Black Stump with a Running Icon
2/1/06
We're finally home after a long and eventful day. After picking Lucky Legs and cool lurker Tom up, headed out to Berowra. Only problem, we almost came a cropper on the Cahill Expressway when I momentarily lost control of the car whilst turning into a bend. If we weren't awake then, we were now and the trip out after that was pretty uneventful.
We arrived in plenty of time and there were already between 6 and 10 CRs sitting in their cars, protecting themselves from the slight drizzle. More and more runners started to pour into the small carpark and it was soon full. There was a plethora of Cool Runners by this stage and Kevin assembled everybody for a start photo and issuing instructions.
We were then off and Belinda, Luckylegs and I drifted towards the rear of the field. After becoming navigationally challenged through the trail, absolutely got lost and walked around in circles for a while until we found the stairs heading down to the ferry. This caused us to lose quite a bit of time, meaning we didn't get to the ferry before 2:30. Another 15 minutes was lost until we found our way onto the ferry. O Runner and Dawn Tiller were coming off the ferry on the way back as we boarded to head out to the castle. After telling Kevin about our misadventure of getting lost on the trail heading down, he suggested we run to the castle and take the road section back after getting off the ferry. As we were getting worried about the time, we followed his advice. We continued to see runners heading down towards the ferry while we headed up the hill towards the castle. We saw Bernie G and Psychoma heading back down the road just before the turnoff onto the trail to head to the castle. The trail to the castle was more runnable than the previous trail but then we got to the bit with all the big rocks and we were very careful down this section as we wanted Luckylegs to stay on her feet and finish the run. We got to the castle and then headed back. Going down the hill towards the ferry was certainly easier than heading uphill. We waited for Luckylegs to come down the hill and then were right on cue to board the ferry just as it pulled in. Across the water and then became the big climb up Berowra Waters Rd. Kevin stopped off and gave us some snakes and water. We got to the top of the hill where I suggested we run back to the finish. Luckylegs was feeling the pinch after the big climb up from Berowra Waters and we agreed to walk it in as we weren't going to break any records. We finally finished in 7:26 and were relieved to be sitting in the comfort of the car soon to be heading home.
It ended a really enjoyable day running with an absolute legend in Luckylegs. This is one tough woman!

Well done guys, I am really glad you did not try the bush section after the ferry, it was a lot tougher, both terrain and navigation, than the first section.
Well done guys!!! What a day... 7 hrs out on your feet... thats stamina for you. B you will have no probs at 6ft with that stamina :-) Hopefully you get to rest the legs tommorow!
Congratulations to you both and for taking the time and effort with LL. Would have liked to have spent more time with you on New Years Eve but .... As I said then Horrie best of luck at Gosford - you shouldn't have any navigation issues unless it is from getting giddy from running in circles. Catch you soon.
Hey, well done Horrie and Belinda escorting LL at the Black Stump.
Horrie with all the kms you've been putting in lately you should make a good fist of it at Gosford, good luck mate!

Yeesh, sounds like a tough day at the office Horrie. Best of luck at Gosford on Saturday mate. Try not to get too dizzy on that track !
Thanks for looking after CB guys! Sounds like an adventurous day. I bet you got 'navigationally challenged' on purpose so as to spend more time in the beautiful Aussie bush!
All the best Horrie for your little (!) adventure this weekend; good luck and try not to get too dizzy!
I wish I was going to be there with you for Gosford, Horrie, but I fear the legs would disappointment me by not getting well past 50km, especially after the long day on Monday.
I hope that you've fully recovered from the long day & that you have a most successful event on Sunday.
