SMC Race Reports

15/1/06

My Report of 10km Race

There were some good size fields today even though there were a few absentees, with the blue and gold there for everybody to see. I again decided to do the 10km and the aim was to run it strongly and try for a sub 45 as I was hoping not to run a PW. Although, never having backed up after a 102km the week before, I did not really know what to expect. Apart from an inflamed joint where the foot joins the big toe on the left foot, I felt okay. I started very conservatively, running the first km in 4:38 and slowly started to pick off runners through the next couple of kms. I then reached the turnaround in 22:36 feeling pretty good and that the sub 45 was achievable. Went past 2 runners at the turnaround and tried to hang onto the runner who was just ahead of me. As that runner started to pull away from me, another guy surged past me just after 6km mark and pursued the guy who was ahead of me. I watched the gap between me and them grow as they got into a real ding dong battle. I just concentrated on holding my form and rhythm from here and finish strongly. I managed to run the last km in 4:09 to finish in 44:43, which was about 30 seconds slower than last month but over 30 seconds ahead of my PW. So I was pretty satisfied with this effort.

Belinda's Report of Half Marathon

I went out to Smithfield for my 3rd visit. As I am looking for challenges in my training for 6 Foot, I decided to do the half. I noticed that Dr Plu was aiming for 1:55 so I thought that if I kept him in sight, that would keep me motivated and my pace around the 2 hour mark. As I didn't wear a watch, I had no idea what my splits were so I was relying on Dr Plu. I kept him in sight for about 18km until the last hill when he pulled further away from me. I then set my sights on some runners with white caps and worked hard to catch them, which I did just before the last drink station. I then pulled away from them as they stopped for a drink and I set my sights on another guy in a CR singlet. I couldn't quite close that gap and followed him in to the finish which I reached in 2:04. I was happy with my run as it gave me a good solid hitout to help sharpen up for 6 Foot.

Comments:
Excellent results guys - I don't know how you do it Horrie? Pretty solid hit out for 6' too Belinda - well done.

Good stuff guys.

Horrie, like 2P you are a freak recovering so well. You must let us all in on the secret.

Great 6ft prep Belinda. And I worked out your CR handle - cool :-)

Two solid runs on the weekend team. Looking forward to you both working towards the 6' in March.
