The Taper Continues

26/2/06

As Belinda was away for the weekend, she ran on her own for an hour through some trails at the Royal National Park at Heathcote. She really enjoyed the solitude of being out there on her own.

27/2/06

I headed out for 10.5km on my own at a very steady pace. Felt quite lethargic from the big day at Jamberoo with Tim the day before.

28/2/06

I decided to head down to Maroubra with Belinda to do 6 hill reps of Torrington Rd. She wasn't feeling the best so we backed off the pace with the aim of running them consistently. That was achieved so a worthwhile session.

2/3/06

Decided to do a fartlek session today. After a 1.5km warmup, we ran 7 x 2 minute efforts with a minute jog recovery between each one for a solid 20 minute workout. Finished off with a 2.5km warmdown.

4/3/06

Headed out to Homebush for the Striders 10km. I was doing 55 minute pacing duties. Headed out at the back of the field but as everybody had their skates on this morning, went out a tad too fast, going through the first km in 5:10. I gave Belinda the option of pulling it back with me or going on ahead on her own. She decided to disappear into the yonder. My 55 minute train had passengers hopping on and off all over the place. But I kept the pace consistent, going through 6km bang on 33 minutes. At this point I was running with Striders Legend, the octagenarian Ron Daly who I handed over the pacing duties to as he was running bang on 5:30/km pace. However, he started to fade a fraction, losing 12 seconds on the 7th km as there was a bit of a climb. It was around here where I saw Belinda for the first time for a while. I estimated her to be around a minute ahead of me. She was ahead of a group of runners including Kevin Tiller but was starting to come back to me. When I first saw this, I thought I noticed a slight limp. When I eventually caught her at 9.5km, I tried to encourage her to finish it off with me. She told me here that her left calf had gone and that she was running at a pace that was easing the pressure on it. Then all sorts of cheerers including Superflake were encouraging her to beat me and she got tired of telling everybody she was injured. I finished a couple of seconds under 55 minutes, with Belinda approximately 20-30 seconds behind. She was too despondent to worry about stopping her watch. Didn't hang around afterwards as we decided to head home straight away with an icepack on her calf. Icepacks have been pretty consistently applied all day. I have also hired her a pair of crutches so she doesn't bear any weight on it for a while. She will ring a physio on Monday to assess the damage and work on recovery program that will hopefully get her to the start line at 6 Foot Track.

Comments:
I can't tell you how sorry I was to hear about your calf problem today; however I'm sure that your wise & prompt treatment of it will minimise any damage. My fingers, toes, arms and legs are crossed for a speedy recovery for you!

Very sorry about the injury Belinda. Lets hope that it can be quickly resolved so that it doesn't mess you up for next week. My thoughts are with you.

All the best for a good week of recovery Belinda, see you at the 6FT start line.

You'll get there Belinda.

All the training and effort you have been putting in will enable you to run 6foot. It will also enable you to recover quicker than you may have previously. Hence I firmly believe all will be well to get you to the line.

Listen to the physio though and tell him/her about 6ft. They may have some strategies for going up the hills to ease the pressure on the calves.

Fingers are crossed for you, From reading the blog and CR site with Horries postings I know how big an event this run is for you. I wish you BOTH all the best.

Hi there Tim hope you are running well too! Take care of mum this week!!

Definitely, my thoughts & wishes for a quick recovery are with you Belinda...sending good vibes & hugs your way!

Lots of good thoughts and healing vibes coming your way! Take care!!

Oh man, fingers crossed and loads and loads of good thoughts being sent your way.

I know its a totally different injury but when I tore my adductor I couldn't run a step on the Saturday. Not a step! The physio pummelled me a bit and I did a 30k race the next day. As I say totally different injury, but where there's hope .....

I hope the physio can get you back on the road swiftly Belinda. fingers and everything else crossed for you!

Awww geez - I know what you are going through Belinda - with my calves....

The best regimen I have come up with is lots of ice (and cold baths) - compression (but not with heat eg Skins or bandage), Brauer Joint and Muscle Gel alternately with either Voltaren/Nurofen Gel and get some Voltaren Rapids (they are by a country mile the best).

Rest up, stay positive and you will have your best chance at making it! See you there :-)

Look forward to seeing a big result from you too Horrie ;-)

Belinda, sorry to hear about your calf. The same thing happened to me last year, but I had the calf all taped up and still ran, so it can be done.

You've put in too much hard work to not be at the start line.

Just put your feet up for a week, don't try to test it and give it every chance to heal, ice and voltaren rapid do work wonders. Best of luck.

Horrie, can you let us know how Belinda is? I've been thinking of her all week & anxious to know if there's been improvement.

Just a quick post to let you know Belinda that I've been thinking of you and sending good thoughts your way.

Has it improved Belinda? I so hope you make it to the Explorers' Tree on Saturday. I know you'll be doing everything you can. You've worked so hard for this day.
