SMC 10km Race 8

23/4/06

A perfect morning for running once again. Almost a replica of the Canberra morning, only a fraction warmer. This is very unusual for SMC as usually it is so hot and humid.

Lined up for my 8th 10km of the series feeling as though I was in for a crack at a Season Best time of 43:10. Got through the first km in around 4:15 and caught up to Sailaway at this point, who was also doing the 10km. He also told me that this was as fast as he was going to run today as he was feeling a bit rusty. It felt like the pace I was hoping to run so we stuck together. We hit the halfway point in 21:14 feeling good. Then in the second half a bit of friendly rivalry kicked in and we would test each other out with the occasional surge here and there. This made sure that we maintained the momentum we had built throughout the first half of the race. When we hit the uphill section just after 6km, I could hear some heavy breathing from behind. I thought it was the Prank Caller trying to have a crack but wasn't going to look behind. As it turned out it was Solo who later told me he got to within 50 metres of us but by the time he got to the top of the hill, Sailaway and I had opened the gap to closer to 100m as we surged down the hill following. We went past Tim and Belinda at around 8km and Tim was happy to see me. We hit the 9km mark in 38:04 and with the benefit of the downhill last km, I wondered if a sub 42 was possible. So I stepped on the gas and Sailaway came with me. I just kept cranking up the pace and he just kept coming with me. We hit the grass together and I just let it rip for the last 100m as I felt I had to have a crack and try and beat him. I finally managed to drop him to finish in 41:58. I was very surprised to be only 3 seconds slower than my 10km PB of this running life. The amazing thing was that I felt in control the whole way and didn't feel I was pushing the envelope until the last km. I guess I just learnt to properly pace a 10km race.

After this I headed back out to meet up with Tim and Belinda. Tim was running ahead of Belinda who was walking. I told Tim to keep running, which he did while I walked it in with Belinda. The bad news out of today is that Belinda's stress fracture is healing very slowly and caused her a lot of pain when she ran. So there will be no running for her for a while and she will just stick to the excercise bike and her core strengthening exercises.

Comments:
Sounds like you had a great run today Horrie and great for you all to be out there.

Sorry to hear Belinda's stressie is not healing as quickly as hoped. Send her my wishes for a speedy recovery.

Well done Horrie on a great run today.

I'm so sorry to hear that Belinda's stressy isn't behaving itself. My best wishes are with her

Well done Horrie. That 'new' PB is sure to fall at North Head as long as it is not windy up there. And Belinda stay sorry to hear the stressie is still sore. Maybe best to stay on the grass like me. And Tim good run in the 5k again.

Go Horrie.... that is an excellent run! Give B a hug for me!!! Tim is always a ledgend in my books! We have some great pics form Canberra of him in the 5km... I have copies for you.

Nice job Horrie - sorry to hear about Belinda's woes, hope it starts to comee good soon.

Nice one Horrie. Looking good mate.

Great run Horrie! Sounds like excellent conditions out there, North Head should be interesting.

Sorry to hear that the stressie is slow in recovery but sounds like you are approaching it correctly Belinda.

Well done Horrie. Just like post Gosford I am amazed at how well you recover.

Give Belinda my best wishes. I sorta know how she feels, though she's been out for way longer than I have. If nothing else we will both have great core strength by the time we are back.

It must be due to the not so secret training you did in Canberra.

You're in good form Horrie.
