CR 5km Challenge - Another PB
27/5/06
Enjoyed another great morning out with a great bunch of people and managed to share in another PB.
Today, it was Bernie G who utilised the services of Horrie's PB pacing. After running a huge PB just over a week ago doing 5km on the track, I put the challenge out to Bernie to have a crack at sub 23. So off we set with the company of Redback who is managing to continue his sensible comeback. After checking with Bernie if she set the Garmin for 4:36 kms, she told me that I had to set the pace and she would try to stay with me. After getting the feeling we were somewhere between 4:30 and 5:00/km pace, I was relieved when I checked on the 1km split of 4:35. Having found the pace, we just had to hold it for the next 4km. This proved to be a challenge in the next km as there were a lot of walkers around. Still, I was pleasantly surprised to see 9:12 on the watch at 2km. I could feel the pace drop ever so slightly on the 3rd km as Bernie's breathing started to get heavier. This proved to be the case when I hit the watch at 3km to reveal a 4:41 3rd km. 5 seconds adrift but still 2km to make it up. I tried to lift the pace gently and reminded Bernie that the 4th km is usually the toughest and to just concentrate on holding her form and rhythm. She was able to do this and her breathing seemed to settle a bit as we went through the 4th km in 4:39. We now had 8 seconds to make up on the last km so I asked Bernie for a special effort. As we lifted the pace, within 30 seconds, Bernie threatened to show us what she had for dinner last night. So I backed off slightly to allow her to compose herself but she was really doing it tough and threatened to do this another 3 or 4 times. Through all this, she managed somehow to keep running at pace and still find something extra to sprint to the finish and claim a 1 second PB.
It was a very special effort and one of the gutsiest I have been associated with. With her determination and her commitment to her training, there will be many more PBs to come.
In all the drama of the last km, as the faster runners came rushing by us, we went past Tim and Belinda who finished not long after us. Tim put in another sprint finish to beat Belinda again.
Then it was off to The Grind for a great breakfast to round off a fabulous morning.

Congrats Horrie on your latest pacing PB. It is such a selfless act and I absolutely no doubt that it was greatly appreciated by Bernie.
Yah Tim!
Yah Tim!
An exciting race, Horrie! It looks like you're set to become everyone's favourite PB pacer...I don't wonder!
Also good to read that Belinda is running again & Tim keeping on; hope all Belinda's injury is behind her now.
