Shortened long run as the taper begins

7/5/06

With Banana Coast on next week, I decided to keep the long run to 20km today but run it at 5 minute kms. Pace fluctuated a bit with HR staying relatively low but the legs starting to grumble a bit in the second half of the run. It was only when I reached 15km that I realised that I put on my shoes that I retired after 6 Foot Track. All of a sudden, it explained why the calves and then the right quad and left knee started to complain. I will have to put these shoes in a different place so this doesn't happen again. Anyway, it wasn't enough to take me away from my game plan and I finished the 20km in 1:39:59, 1 second ahead of the target time. After a few stretches, all the tender spots seemed to respond and I have pulled up alright with no ill effects from the run. I will keep it to 2 x 10.5km runs and probably throw an hour's cycling in as well.

Hopefully, by this time next week I will be basking in the glory of completing another epic.

Comments:
I have no doubt that you'll be basking :-)

It was lovely to see you, albeit briefly, today!

Sorry to hear you couldn't make it to Striders. It would have been good to meet you.
I ran it as though you were there anyway :) on pace until the 7th km, when you would have pulled away...as predicted!!
Look forward to seeing you at another run when I get down there again.

Just to be sure maybe you should retire those shoes to the garbage bin!

Hope the week goes well. What are your plans in the lead up to the weekend? I'd love to hear the final details of the prep.

Whoops, I meant to say 'finer' details.

Nice run Horrie - can't wait to read how well you peeled the banana.

Then PMC?

Mate the Vinnies bin at the local servo is the place for dead shoes. No good hurting your legs on old shoes.

You're "epic bound" once again, Horrie! Enjoy!

Enjoy the taper, and good luck with the banana coast epic; bananas polish off a good meal of red Indian lentils too.

Bask away Horrie. I hope it all goes well and that you have a really good time.

Horrie
Wished I could join you as planed butmaybe we can do something together later in the year.
