Sutherland to Surf and recovery
23/7/06
We headed out to The Shire for this annual speed fest. As it is a predominantly downhill course, you can be almost guaranteed a PB for the first 10km of this 11km race. Although Belinda was just aiming to get through the run in one piece as it was her first race since her comeback from injury. After a 15 minute warmup I bid her farewell and she joined Ken Smith from the PMC at the back of the pack. I settled in about 20 metres from the front as I didn't want to run the risk of starting too fast. It made my day when this guy in his 80s jostled in and stood right in front of me with his two nieces and said he hoped he didn't get bowled over. What the???
It took a while until I could get some clear ground and start to build up a bit of pace. By the time I got to 1km I started overtaking some people I recognised and followed a few that I recognised. Between 1 and 2km I heard some heavy breathing and couldn't believe when I turned around and saw the Prank Caller from SMC renewing his acquaintance. Not long after this I spotted Solo and Barefoot up ahead. Not long after this I noticed O Runner coming back to me rather quickly and he seemed to be doing it tough and appeared to be labouring. I managed to ease ahead of Solo at around the 5km mark. Not long after this I spotted Papa Luigi and knew I had some work ahead to try and reel him in. I was pleasantly surprised to edge ahead of him around the 6km mark. Barefoot looked to be doing it tough but he managed to stay just out of reach until around the 9km mark when I was aided by the lovely downhill run into Cronulla and was finally able to claim him. I lost sight of the Prank Caller so I don't know if he took off and gapped me or stopped at a drink station and I went past him. I'm sure the results will tell me. I was pleasantly surprised to go through the 10km mark in 41:42, which was 2 seconds slower than last year. The last km seems to drag on forever and just climbs steadily until we turn into the carpark for a nice little downhill stretch to the finish. I was happy to hold on quite strongly for a 4:07 last km to give me a 45:49 by my watch but an official time of 45:50 which was exactly the same as last year. I was surprised by this as my leadup to this event was completely different to last year.
Belinda was happy to run 65:XX official time and a 64:XX net time after taking a minute to get over the start line. There was a bit of muscle soreness after the run but this was ironed out with a good stretch, which was a relief.

I headed out on my own for a 10.5km recovery run this morning. I was happy just to bowl along at 5 min/km pace and felt very relaxed. I was very happy with how I pulled after yesterday and felt surprisingly fresh.

great runs guys - nice to catch up at the bbq also! and just for the record i did show up to training this morning!
Great runs by both of you. Gee, you must be so happy to clock up the same time as last year. Obviously all those ultras haven't slowed you down. Better do some more!
Yes, well done. Seems like no damage was done during the run too. It's always a relief to get through unscathed, injury free, from a run.
