Time to take a break

25/9/06

I had an hour on the program today so I opted for my 10.5km loop at a steady pace. I was feeling okay until I had to stop at a set of traffic lights. Once I stopped, I felt a surge of pain from the ITB. Tried to get going after the lights changed but I was very conscious of the ever increasing pain. Got a couple of hundred metres past the 4km mark where I decided to pull the pin and walk home with my tail between my legs.

As there was no pain from the knee, I decided to head to SWEAT with Belinda. I thought I would go through the drills and see how I felt. I was happy to be pain free and felt confident to run the 4x1200s on the program. We were joined by Virtual this morning for the first time and now all GBH are SWEATing. As we are not allowed on the track, we ran them around the lake where we did last week's fartlek. I felt great on the first 2, clocking 4:44 for both. I slowed a bit on the 3rd, running it in 4:53 before the ITB made its presence known, slowing my last effort to 5:02. I then did a warmdown lap with Virtual and Blue Dog and was now really suffering.

Belinda ran 4x800s and was pleased to get through the run without causing any grief to her hamstring problem.

As both Belinda and I had 90 minutes on the program, we decided to meet a few of the girls from SWEAT and run with them. An early rise to meet at Centennial Park at 5.15 and we were soon off and running. I felt okay to begin with and Belinda was running well and the pace was certainly quicker than if we were doing this run on our own. Finished the first lap of around 8km feeling okay. However, the ITB was starting to grind a bit at the start of the second lap. It never got to the painful stage today and we were able to finish 16.3km. Belinda's knee was causing her a bit of grief towards the end and slowed her down a bit.

28/9/06

We were off to SWEAT again for reps of Wild Wally. I had 7 on the program while Belinda had 6. I wasn't sure how the knee was going to hold up on the hills. Sure enough, it started to bother me on the first rep. I kept quiet and just kept running the reps at a slower pace than usual. But when I finished the 5th rep, I felt a surge of pain in the knee which seemed like nerve pain. After sitting the 6th rep out, I decided to run the 7th as the pain had disippated. I decided to push it a bit harder on this rep to see what would happen. I was happy to run my quickest rep, finishing strongly on the last climb with Amjan. However, once I stopped I felt the same surge of pain. A gentle walk down the hill and a slow jog back to the oval and the grind started again. I decided to walk it back to the finish. I have decided to have a break from running until I can run pain free.

Better news for Belinda today though. She was able to run 5 reps today without any problems with her knee or hamstring.

Comments:
Yeah, I'd agree that the body might need a bit of TLC. You've probably been in the red zone since Glasshouse and continued on a decent program. Put the feet up and let the body have a bit of recovery before you go out hard again :)

Take care of that ITB, Horrie!

They are mongrel bastards. Mine has just started twinging again and has sent me into paranoia.

Take it easy with yours. Ther's no short cuts with the recovery.

Cheers,
Ben

Look after that one Horrie. You don't want to be out for ages like Tesso.

Glad to see Belinda is going well :)

The best running advice I got was when you told me last year to listen to my body. Since then I have managed my running around exactly that and feel that its the sole reason why I have not broken down with a serious injury.

You've had such a great year mate. A little time off is just reward for your body who has to put up with your demanding schedule.

Horrie - i want to hear of you resting for 10 days at least! no running.

Belinda - great news on the 5 reps. Well done. All that SWEAT is really starting to shine through in results. GREAT!

Horrie, after running GH last year, I pretty much only had a few days off and then ran 2 half marathons in successive weeks- hard. Big mistake, I was flat for a couple of months after that. Running 100 miles can take a lot more out of you than you realise/feel at the time. Rest up, cross train, get on the bike and back to the pool. Get the tennis ball out and roll your ITB over it like crazy, ice every night and stretch. Good luck mate, see you at GNW.

Good decision Horrie - no point pushing an ITB - I did earlier in the year and almost missed Six Foot as a consequence. It's not like you have anything to prove at the moment - you have had a bumper year ;-)

It was a nice run on Wednesday, good to catch up and have a chat.

Belinda, you really mastered those hill reps on Thursday.

Hope the niggles settle down, see you on Tuesday.

I'll be checking here for further news, Horrie...hopefully no bad news with injuries; good that you backed off when you felt the pain & walked home.

Belinda is looking good...see you both at Fitzroy Falls.

Look after the ITB Horrie you don't want to be off like me for 8 months. Take it easy and give up GNW if you have to so you can run a good Six Foot next year.

horrie - take care of the itb and the itb will take care of u :)
