Striders 10km Homebush - Another PB for Belinda

7/10/06

I am very happy to report that Belinda did what I expected her to do and ran a 54 second PB to stop the clock in 54 even. After a good warmup, we were both ready to give it our best.

A good start gave her a 1km split of 5:15 and she was a bit nervous she might have gone out a bit quick. A mishap with a dropped drink bottle slowed her down a bit in the next km and then she was joined by the Ellie bus with Kit and Deanne driving. She continued on and felt as if she was running well. Every time I saw her she was running very smoothly and looking good. She started to struggle at 7km and ditched her fuel belt here to try and make it a bit easier. This worked a bit for her but not as much as she was hoping for. I was waiting for her at the corkscrew, which is about 200m from the finish. This wasn't a great idea as she was worried when she saw me that I DNF'd or something went wrong. After I reassured her that everything was alright, I did my best to drag her through to the finish and as she approached the finish I saw 53:5X on the clock. I told her to give it everything to see if she could get under 54 minutes but she crossed exactly at that point. She was a bit disappointed that she didn't go under 54 but after a tough 2nd half where a lot of runners slowed down due to the warm conditions, she did well to smash her PB so emphatically. Her hamstrings were very tight afterwards and didn't start to loosen up until about 4 hours later. She is icing them now as I type this.

As for my run, after getting through the warmup with not a peep of the troublesome ITB, I was confident I could convert some solid training into a decent performance. After running sub 42 at my last 10km at Lane Cove 2 months ago, I thought anything around the 42 minute mark would be good but hoped I wasn't being too optimistic considering the slow and painful recovery since Glasshouse. After a good first km of 4:03 I was thinking this was possible. The pace slowed slightly through the next 2km but I was still on target. Just after passing a very sorry looking Professor, I noticed the HR was starting to climb and I was becoming very aware of the rising temperature. I decided at this point just to drop the pace back a notch, have a drink and see if I could get the HR to where it should be. After a drink I felt the immediate effect and started to pick up again. But that didn't last long and in the 5th km the pace slowed to a 4:20 to give me a halfway split of 20:53. Just after this I was passed by a re-energised EJ so I told myself I just had to grit the teeth and try to hold onto the pace I was now running. For the next 3km I was able to hold onto 4:20 pace and in this period was able to go past Hamburglar, O Runner and Darren from SWEAT who I normally chase at training. This gave me the pick up I needed as even though I was working very hard to hold 4:20/km pace, I realised the warm weather was claiming a few casualties that went out too hard. The second time around Wentworth Common was a real struggle as I attempted to choose the best running line which included running some of the loop on the gravel. This always seems to slow you down and I was bit despondent being passed by Silverfox who was pushing Number 2 in the pram as well as talking to all the runners coming the other way. I actually told him this at the time and he reminded me that I did run 100 miles a couple of weeks ago and that I was having a bottler of a run. His kind and encouraging words gave me the pickup I needed. I then got stuck into myself for goofing off on this km once I realised I plodded around in 4:33. I then made a conscious effort to lift the pace and was able to go past a few more tiring runners and was buoyed by again seeing Belinda running so well. As quick as I thought I was now running, I just managed to finish the last km in 4:22 to stop the clock at 42:50. So the result was around what I was expecting, which was great considering the conditions far from being ideal. This was confirmed by a lot of runners not looking too good at the finish and 1 was being treated by the St Johns Ambulance people.

So, all in all, a very successful outing for Team Horrie.

Comments:
Fantastic results guys - I saw the fuel belt at the 7k marker and wondered if it was Belinda's.

And yes Horrie Quarry Rd is starting to look good ;-)

Congrats Belinda on your latest PB. And Horrie, you are a machine!

I'm looking forward to seeing you both next Saturday!

Congratulations on the excellent PB Belinda. Horrie keep on motoring mate you have heaps of k's in the legs so the speed won't be there at the moment, just plenty of strength.

Good team run guys. That's an excellent run from Belinda - I'm sure she'll be running low 50s before long.

Congratulations Belinda. You were looking very strong when I saw you. With all the training you have been doing it is a nice reward.

Well done Belinda! You were looking very strong when I saw you on the second lap. For sure that time will tumble further, as Horrie suggests Saturday morning certainly slowed a few people up.

Great work for you both, & what a PB for Belinda.....Saturday is looking good!

Just been catching up on some blogs, congrats to Belinda, reward for effort put in no doubt. You seem to be running back into form too Horrie after GH, looking good for some tough months of racing, good stuff. Well done.
