SMC Half
19/11/06
After setting the alarm an hour later due to that clock not being changed since the introduction of daylight savings., Belinda and I were hoping we could catch the start of the Half but knew we were going to miss it by a few minutes. That's the way it turned out so we were off on a handicapped start of around 3 and a half minutes. As I was hoping to join the K Bus again, I set off at around 97 pace for the half and left Belinda behind. I thought by running at this pace, I could possibly catch them by the 10km mark. When I eventually saw Aunty K and Eagle, they were probably 4 minutes ahead. That made me realise that I was going to have my work cut out catching them. I then realised that the only way I was going to catch them is if Eagle would start to feel the pinch after his storming 100 mile run last week. When I got to the 10km mark in 46:23 and saw no sight of them up the hill just after this point, I decided to back it off and dropped the pace back to 5 minutes/km. When I saw them again at the turnaround, they still seemed the same distance ahead so I commented that they were too fast for me today. I had a quick stop at the 16km drink station as they had run out of water bags and enjoyed a cup of water on the way up to the turnaround. I then stopped in on the way back and had another cup of water as well as a sports drink. The guys I had been chasing since 10km had moved back in front of me so I set myself the task of finishing strongly and catching them before the finish. I caught 2 but couldn't catch the other one. I finished about 3 seconds slower than last month for a nice hitout. After a few cups of water at the finish, I headed back out to run in with Belinda. When I saw her, I noticed she had caught up to Bristol CFC and passed him. I asked her about him and she told me that he was doing it tough. I decided to let her finish on her own as she was doing it comfortably and headed out to the bus crossing when I saw him. I turned around with him and he told me that it was going to be his first half marathon he had run without stopping and walking. So I made sure that I kept him moving all the way to the finish. He was ecstatic to finish in 2:14, which was way under his estimated finishing time of 2:30. Belinda had finished a couple of minutes earlier, in 2:08 and managed to catch and pass another couple of runners in the process.

That's a pretty good hit-out considering your recent cold Horrie.
Good run Belinda - especially after a missed start and zero warm-up!

Good run to the both of you. Isn't it great to have these runs that you can do and measure your previous performances against to see how you are progressing?
Very good of you Horrie to run back out and bring in the other runners. Makes it all worthwhile when we can do that. I know when fast runners come back and get me that it really helps so i try to pay back the effort when I see someone else out there struggling after I have finished too.
Hope you are all well. :)
