Return to Quarry Rd
14/1/07
We headed out to Quarry Rd with Jen_runs and Becky O to again hit the trails after our 12 Hour sojourn at Gosford last week. As we were backing up after last week's effort, we weren't expecting too much. As we headed down to the creek, Jen and I ran ahead while Belinda and Becky settled in behind at a slower pace. Just after the creek we saw Spud and stopped for a chat. We continued on and reached Quarry Rd in around 46 minutes. Jen and I turned around and headed back and finally saw Belinda and Becky running together. I turned back around with Becky and Belinda and headed back to Quarry Rd just to make sure they were okay. As we reached Quarry Rd, Spud was finishing his first lap. I then waited for him to refill his hand held drink bottle and we headed back, chatting about last week's race and Coast to Kosci. When we got to the creek and the climb started back to Stewart Ave, I had to let him go as the legs had nothing when I got to the hills. We crossed paths as he headed back to Quarry Rd as I was finishing at the Stewart Ave end. I don't have this split because with all the turning around at the Quarry Rd, I leave my watch off for around half an hour. I set off with the target of catching back up to Jen and finishing with her. It takes a long time to catch a glimpse of her but I finally see her near the toilet, which is around 4km from Stewart Ave. It takes me around another km before I finally catch up with her as she is very strong on the hills. I am happy that I have reached Quarry Rd in 44 minutes this time. I am starting to notice that my energy levels are dropping and am struggling to keep up with Jen on the slightest uphills. We run into Belinda and Becky heading back as they decide to turn around at the toilet on the 2nd lap, cutting their run to 21km, which is great considering they are still recovering from their debut Ultras last week. Jen and I again run on ahead and I still manage to stay with her until the creek crossing, aided by some strong downhill running. But once again, the climb up from the creek is a struggle and it is now like Groundhog Day as I have to let Jen go ahead, unable to keep up with her. I again run into Spud on his way back to Quarry Rd for the completion of his 3rd lap. I am happy to reach Stewart Ave about 2 minutes behind Jen to finish around 26.5km in 3:10. I am glad it's over as the energy levels were not back to the level required at this stage. Belinda and Becky finish their 21km around 5 minutes later and we hang around for a while chatting about our morning's efforts. The trip back is a bit quieter as we are all feeling the pinch from our run.

Sounded like a tough morning. Make sure you get enough recovery time so that you can train with quality for your next big one. Hope you are sharp next Sunday at SMC to pull me through to near 92.
It was good to catch up with you out there Horrie. How good is it running a trail in the middle of Sydney and feeling you're a million miles away? I'm not surprised the legs weren't there for you after last weekends effort, nice back up all the same.
Good run Horrie. Just for your info, Sportsman was also feeling the pinch on Sunday at the STaR. So you are not alone there.
